The Crusade Against Equine Colic has designated June as Equine Colic Awareness Month. it is the Crusade's goal to save as many horses as possible from deadly and debilitating bouts of equine colic through educating you – the horse men and women who care for them.
The Crusade Against Equine Colic organization was started by Rosemary Watson whose horse, Grady colicked, and, after weeks of suffering, died of complications related to colic surgery for a displaced intestine.
Since horses' digestive systems are very sensitive and it is easy to upset the delicate balance, colic is a complex problem for horse owners. Knowing as much as possible about the causes and symptoms of colic is important for every horse owner.
Following a feeding program that is as close to that of horses in the wild as possible, supplementing the horse's diet in positive ways to prevent colic, including the use of supplements that aid the horse's digestive system, recognizing colic symptoms, and calling the veterinarian at the first signs of colic are the suggested ways to prevent and minimize the toll that colic takes on both the horse and its owner.
