Realizing that health problems can strike even the best cared for horses, Merial Animal Health reminds horse owners, that with spring approaching, they should make sure that horses are protected against potential disease threats that arrive along with warmer weather. As the mosquito population increases and more time is spent on trails, exposure to ticks and other animals also increases risks for disease.

People who are passionate about horses lead the equine division of Merial Animal Health.  Merial offers products to protect pleasure horses, racehorses, performance horses or working horses. These products are backed by a research and development team that ranks among the world's leaders in healthcare innovation.

Importance of vaccinations against deadly diseases

Importance of vaccinations against deadly diseases

Spring is a good time to make sure horses are protected against potential diseases.

Three good reasons for vaccinating horses:

  • Vaccination may be the only way to help protect horses from some diseases.
  • Preventing disease through vaccination causes less stress than recovery from infection.
  • Many diseases cause permanent damage or death.

Currently, five diseases account for the core vaccinations recommended annually by the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP). These diseases are West Nile Virus (WNV), Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE), Western Equine Encephalitis (WEE), tetanus and rabies.

Today, innovative vaccines can use technology that helps them target only the parts of a virus needed for an immune response. Some vaccines also stimulate more than one arm of the immune system to protect the horse.

RECOMBITEK® Brand Equine Vaccines use recombinant canarypox-vectored vaccine technology that gives horses both of these advantages while helping protect against either WNV or equine influenza.

  • RECOMBITEK rWNV-EWT is the only combination vaccine labeled to aid in the prevention of disease aused by WNV in horses
  • •Combines WNV with reliable killed EEE and WEE virus vaccines and tetanus toxoid to help prevent four out of five core diseases in a single annual dose*
