ZetrOZ LLC, manufacturer of the UltrOZ Elite, is recruiting patients in a clinical trial at Hagyard Medical Equine Institute for Proximal Sesamoiditis of the Fetlock joints. According to Bryant Guffey, CEO of Ultroz, LLC, “the condition for sesamoiditis is a difficult challenge faced by many equine practitioners and often efforts at treatment result in poor outcomes.”

Sesamoiditis in horses - a difficult challenge

Sesamoiditis, or inflammation of the sesamoid bones, is most common in racehorses, eventers and show jumpers.

Sesamoiditis, or inflammation of the sesamoid bones, is most common in racehorses, eventers and show jumpers where high loading and over flexion of the fetlock joint results in tearing of the proximal sesamoidean and suspensory ligament attachments and internal bone stress. Both front legs are usually affected. Fractures of the sesamoid bone tend to be more difficult to heal than those of other bones.

“Because of this challenge, we decided to examine the effects of Low Intensity Therapeutic Ultrasound (LITUS) as a new therapeutic agent for sesamoiditis” states Guffey.  “LITUS was originally successful as a bone fracture repair therapy for non-union fractures. Over time, scientists and clinicians also expanded the therapy into soft tissue healing applications like tendon and ligament healing with very positive results.  Now you see LITUS used for a wide variety of conditions ranging from normal maintenance to severe injury recovery.”

Dr. Laura Werner and Dr. Luke Fallon at Hagyard Equine Medical Institute are conducting the clinical trial and are currently looking for cases of yearlings with bilateral sesamoiditis of the Fetlock. The study involves treatment with a low intensity therapeutic ultrasound device for 4 hours daily for a period of 90 days. Participating horses will receive free radiographs at 30,60, and 90 day intervals.   “The Ultroz therapeutic ultrasound units are very safe, easy to use and apply,” states Dr. Warner.  Owners with questions about the study or inquiries regarding horse eligibility may contact Dr. Werner directly at (859) 321-3990.  If you have questions about the UltrOZ Elite for use on other conditions, please call Brian Collins at (859) 321-3383.
