Regular turnout time for horses during cold weather may help prevent respiratory problems that could result from poor barn ventilation.<
Ventilation of barns and stalls is a major concern in winter. When barn doors are closed too tightly for long periods of time, the air becomes laden with dust and other polutants so the air needs to be cleared. In addition, new additions to the herd can bring coughs and colds. If using round bales of hay which may be convenient winter forage remember that dust and mold content can cause respiratory problems and colic.
Taking an active approach for better horse health:
- Keep looking under that blanket - Check body condition.
- Hydration - Heat water sources to prevent freezing.
- Traction - Will frisky or mobility challenged horses slip? Check their path.
- Extreme cold - Exercise in extreme conditions can put undo stress on the respiratory system.
- Cooling out - More time is needed after riding to ensure you are leaving the horse dry and comfortable.
